2016 Penguin Plunge

This is Why We Plunge

Register today for the 2016 Special Olympics Vermont Penguin Plunge!

There's no denying, it's Penguin Plunge season! In schools, businesses, and households across the state, excitement is building for the chilliest event of the year. Veteran Plungers are choosing their costumes and soon-to-be first time Plungers are working on their 32 degrees of courage. While excitement builds, we want to take a moment to remember why we Plunge.

Special Olympics Vermont provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in 13 Olympic-type sports for 1,140 children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Across three events (North Bennington, Burlington, and Cool Schools), the Penguin Plunge raises more than $450,000 (45% of the SOVT operating budget!) to sustain and grow Special Olympics Vermont. With the support of our amazing community, every year Special Olympics Vermont is reaching more athletes, improving the quality of sports training and competition opportunities, and changing more lives. Register today to be part of the movement!

We Plunge for Unified Sports: Unified Sports gives athletes with and without intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete on sports teams together breaking down barriers, building friendships, and fostering respect and inclusion.

We Plunge for Healthy Athletes: Special Olympics is the largest global provider of health care services for people with intellectual disabilities. At Summer Games each year, athletes in Vermont receive dental, vision, hearing, physical therapy, and nutrition screenings at no cost.  In 2015, 51 athletes received new eyeglasses or hearing aids!

We Plunge for competition opportunities: Nearly every year, Special Olympics Vermont athletes have the opportunity to compete on the national or global stage. In 2015, two Vermont athletes competed at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles.

We Plunge to change lives: 30 years ago, the world was a very different place for people with intellectual disabilities and their families. While there is still much work to be done, Special Olympics is leading the movement to build respectful, inclusive communities by using the power of sport to showcase the gifts and abilities of our athletes.
